About the M4A2 Sherman

The M4A2 was a diesel powered variant of the famous M4 Sherman tank, used exclusively by the US Marines during World War II. Armed with a 75mm cannon, the Sherman was the ideal close-up fire support platform, as the Marines dug out entrenched defenders in their island-hopping campaign towards victory against Japan. The US Marines fitted their Sherman tanks with removable fording kits for the amphibious landings that each island assault would require. In this case we have fitted the M4A2 with the unique drum-style fording kits used in the US Marines’ 3rd Tank Battalion. Also included in the kit is a complete set of stickers based on tanks from the Iwo Jima and Tarawa campaigns, allowing you to customize the look of your kit.

About the IJA Coastal Defense Battery:

On December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan declared war on the United States, Great Britain and Netherlands. After an unprecedented string of coordinated surprise attacks, Japan soon controlled a vast amount of territory, including most of the Western Pacific. To defend their newly expanded empire, the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy embarked on an ambitious campaign to construct defensive bastions on the outlying islands and territories. In order to achieve victory in the Pacific, for the Allies would be forced them to breach this ring of concrete and steel.

The IJA Coastal Defense Battery is a multipart battle pack containing a Type 10 120mm Naval Gun, a prepared gun pit with ammunition lockers, and concrete observation pillbox. It also contains four Imperial Japanese Soldiers equipped with the state of the art infantry weapons (including two over-molded guns from BrickArms)

The Type 95 “Ha-Go” Light Tank was Japan’s standard issue light tank at the onset of World War II. It featured an armored hull that could withstand all contemporay battlefield small arms, and was armed with a 37mm gun capable of firing armor-piercing and high explosive rounds.  The Type 95 saw service in Manchuria, China, Southeast Asia and the Pacific island campaigns. While out-classed by more powerful Allied medium tanks, the Type 95 still provided an effective mobile punch against infantry and small fortifications throughout the entire war.

About the LVT-4

The LVT (Landing Vehicle Tracked) was designed to to fulfill the role of mobile support vehicles for bringing cargo and equipment ashore during the Pacific island hopping campaign envisioned by US strategists for the defeat of Japan. The LVT was essentially a boat while in water, but could also crawl on land using caterpillar tracks like a tank. Early LVTs were not armored, being intended mainly for the tansport of cargo. Experience during combat operations would show that the LVT was ideally suited for carrying combat troops directly to shore, especially where coral reefs prevented boats from from being effective in this task.  The LVT-4 was a direct descendant of earlier LVT cargo transports, but had significant improvements, most notably a ramp at the rear so that troops and cargo could be discharged directly onto the beach (rather than over the sides of the earlier versions). Many LVT-4s were fitted with armor kits over the crew compartment and were generally fitted with up to five machine guns to provide suppressive fire onto the beach.  The LVT-4 could carry as many as 30 combat equipped troops, cargo and supplies, an artillery piece, or even a 1/4 ton 4×4 JEEP.

About the LVT(A)-4:

The LVT was originally designed to carry cargo and equipment to shore during amphibious beach landings during World War II. The US Marines quickly adopted the LVT as an assault vehicle and first used them against a contested beach during the invasion of Tarawa island.  The original LVTs were not armored and the heaviest weapons they carried were the Browning .50 caliber M2HB. A more heavily armed assault version of the LVT was called for and the LVT(A) was created. The original LVA(A)-1 used the turret M3 Stuart light tank, but the 37mm gun proved to be ineffective against bunkers and other fortified positions. The LVT(A)-4 was upgraded with the turret from the M8 Scott 75mm GMC, which proved a far more capable weapon for supporting assault troops. The LVT(4) was also equipped with one hull-mounted .30 caliber MG and .50 caliber MG on the turret. This was often augmented with one or more additional .30 caliber guns for the turret crew.

The general purpose scout car (JEEP) was designed to be an agile,light weight multi-use vehicle to be used by the new motorized US Army forces during World War II. The JEEP’s performance and reputation was legendary as this car was the adopted light weight vehicle by both Allied and Axis armies.

About the M2A4 Light Tank

The M2 Light Tank devopled during the 1930’s for the US Army and was largely a test bed for several different design concepts. The M2A4 was the final iteration of the M2 light tank and it had a single turret armed with a 37mm anti-tank gun and coaxal .30 cal machine gun. It was also armed with five additional .30 caliber machine guns in varius locations. The M2A4 formed the pattern for what would evelove into the M3/M5 Stuart light tank, which went into mass production shortly before the outbreak of World War II. By the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, the M2 was largely regulated to training purposes. However, some US Marines units sent to Guadalcanal still had M2A4s in their inventory, where they performed admirably next to M3s during the hard-fought campaign to capture and hold the island
